Observing

Taking in the dance from outside — developing the eye for reading physical conversations, spatial patterns, and the dynamics of contact. Observing is CI's research method: gathering data, noting patterns, and generating understanding of how bodies communicate through shared weight. It is distinct from witnessing, which is receptive and non-judgmental; observing is active, analytical, and oriented toward learning.
